Russia defends doping accusations

  • Russian Minister of Sport Vitali Mutko said on Saturday (November 14th) that the current doping allegations surrounding Russian athletics is "a global problem" and claimed that Russia would have a new structure in place in 60 days.

    SOUNDBITE(Russian) Vitali Mutko, Russian Minister of Sport:

    "What is the doping problem? This is a global problem. It is an individual choice of a sportsperson. It's his or her personal choice and their coach's choice. Only he or she can allow a banned substance get into their body. And the sportspeople who cheat must be punished, yet I am in a full agreement with you that healthy athletes, the clean athletes should be protected."

    SOUNDBITE (Russian) Vitali Mutko, Russian Minister of Sport:

    "It is important for everyone, for our talented sportsmen like Masha Kuchina who is 20 and already a world champion and Yelena Isinbayeva who wanted to go to her fifth Olympics and who has an immaculate reputation. Certainly, they should be protected and we will do everything we can to protect them."

    "Today we, with Mr. Coe, President of the International Federation of International Track and Field Athletics, agreed upon a sort of a road map. As early as tomorrow I will demand the gathering of an urgent conference. Those who are suspected of compromising their reputation will be removed from the system of management of the track and field athletics."

    "In 60 days, track and field athletics will be renewed, bringing together all the standards of the international federation. That is provided they have them. Today I told them that if you gave us the standards. we will adopt all the standards WADA and IAAF will offer to us.

    "We will come to the IAAF again to present ourselves as corresponding to these standards. I hope that our team will be reinstated because of its rights."
