Amla: South Africa still 'potent' despite injuries

Saturday, November 14 2015 by SNTV
  • South Africa captain Hashim Amla says that the team can survive without Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander on Friday (!3rd November), ahead of the one-day international (ODI) against India.

SOUNDBITE (English) Hashim Amla, South Africa captain:

"I think Dale (Steyn) and Vernon (Philander) are ruled out for this match. Dale as well. Obviously losing Dale, the best bowler in the world, and Vernon arguably being the best all-rounder in the world, it certainly changes the dynamics of our team. But the guys who are going to be replacing them are quality cricketers. And we are very fortunate in our team to have great depth in our bowling attack especially. If you are going to win a series - a series is generally won with 15 players and not just 11. So I think although it is early in the series that we have lost Dale and Vernon in this match. But I still think we have got a potent bowling attack."

"Even if Vernon was playing this Test, I think we had enough. The team was pretty settled with who the seamers were basically going to be. So I don't think it really matters that much. The fact that Vernon did his ankle - was it yesterday? Just yesterday. Things like that happen and sometimes you get a little fairytale story from these type of things. If Kyle (Abbot) rocks up and has an amazing day then so be it. But one thing I do know about Kyle is that he is a wonderful professional and when he puts his boots on he's ready even if he just got off the plane 10 minutes before."
