Prince Ali: 'FIFA's reputation must improve dramatically'

Friday, November 13 2015 by SNTV
  • SNTV spoke to FIFA presidential candidate Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan in Istanbul on Wednesday (11th November) following Jordan's international friendly with Malta. The Prince vowed that he would "open the windows and unlock the doors" of FIFA if he was elected to become president of football's world governing body. "We have to reverse the pyramid where we have to put our players and fans at the top of our priorities," said the Prince.

SOUNDBITE (English) Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan, FIFA presidential candidate:

"Well I think the president of FIFA should be somebody who understands the needs of 209 national associations, somebody who can serve football from grassroots up, and focus on development for national associations. But at the same time we need to improve the reputation of FIFA dramatically. And that can only happen through a change in the leadership of the top and a leadership who understands the needs of this century we are living in and who can work with everyone across the globe."

SOUNDBITE (English) Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan, FIFA presidential candidate:

"First of all, the first thing I would do is to open the windows and unlock the doors. I think it is very important that we are an open governing body, and also that we serve the needs of our national associations. We have to reverse the pyramid where we have to put our players and fans at the top of our priorities, and work from there. We have to be a service organisation. And if we can do that, and we do it correctly, and I believe that I can, then we would be in the right direction to bring FIFA back on track."

SOUNDBITE (English) Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan, FIFA presidential candidate:

"Not at all, that's democracy, I think it is a good thing that there are other candidates. Having said that I was the first one to take up this challenge, and I hope to see it through. And it is not about the presidency at all, but it is about changing the culture of football, and that change needs to come from the top, and I believe I am the best person to do that."
