Montano speaks out about 'shameful' Russian doping scandal

Thursday, November 12 2015 by SNTV
  • US Olympian Alysia Montano, who just missed out on a medal at the 2012 London Olympics, spoke out on Tuesday as the World Anti-Doping Agency's commission report on Russian state-sponsored doping continues to reverberate around the world of sport.

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Alysia Montano, Olympian:

"The biggest thing that was a shock to me, is how it could be going on for so long. Something is surely going to happen. Somebody is surely going to get caught. This is surely going to come to an end. And just to be in the sport for as long as I have, at a pro level, and just now have the corruptness of the federation bought to light, there is no words for it. There is no words for it, shameful."

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Alysia Montano, Olympian:

"When it starts to eat and there is actual evidence and proof of athletes that have been doped and caught and that are slapped on the wrist, two year ban and then you see them in the next Olympics, that to me said everything about the federation and what they were doing to protect their monetary gains in this sport. It just leaves you feeling hopeless."

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Alysia Montano, Olympian:

"You can not give me back my podium celebration. You can not give me back my family celebration time. You can not give me the time where I am watching my flag be raised, and standing there proud that I was able to represent my country in such a manner. Can't give that back to me. At the end of the day, it's robbery. I was robbed of so much. Not just hardware itself, but moments, time. And you can not give those back. So that is something I think. . . I hate to say it, because I want to think of myself as a forgiving person, but at this moment it is hard to say that it is forgivable."
