Australia reacts to doping scandal

Wednesday, November 11 2015 by SNTV
  • Australian Olympic Committee chef de mission Kitty Chiller and an Australian Olympic medallist in race walking, Jared Tallent, gave their reactions on Tuesday (10th November) after a World Anti-Doping Agency commission report released on Monday (9th November) recommended that Russia should be banned from athletics competition.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Kitty Chiller, Australian Olympic Committee chef de mission:

"This report is incredibly dark and incredibly disturbing. However, having said that, it's also a great message for clean athletes around the world. Australia and the Australian Olympic Committee will continue to have a zero tolerance to any sort of doping in sport by individuals, by athletes and, most importantly, by the entourage around those athletes as per the new WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) code. The administration and administrators and organisations around the world must be held accountable for the actions that they implement in respect of doping in sport. Athletes have always been tested and sanctioned and suffered ramifications. Organistations and administrations now have to face the same thing."

"The allegations are absolutely shocking. To find out that the man who beat me in London (2012 Olympics), Sergey Kirdyapkin, probably should have been banned as early as 2011. But the IAAF held off on banning him until after the Olympic Games in London, so effectively letting him race even though they knew he was a dope cheat, and he went on and beat me for the gold medal. So, it's pretty devastating, it makes you very angry to know that your international federation... the federation or the sporting body that should be protecting clean athletes was looking after the dope cheats. So it's pretty hard to swallow and, yeah, reallly disappointing to read that."
