Squash: Massaro wins Qatar Classic

  • England's Laura Massaro claims her second title in two weeks, beating Nour El Sherbini at the Qatar Classic to land a second successive Professional Squash Association World Series trophy.

Briton Laura Massaro lifted a second successive PSA World Series trophy with a thrilling defeat of Egypt's Nour El Sherbini at the Qatar Classic.

The Englishwoman trailed in the decisive fifth game but rallied to seal an 11-8 12-14 11-9 8-11 11-9 victory.

Massaro followed up her triumph at the US Open in October and will move up a spot to third in the world rankings next month.

The Preston-based player started the match strongly with some typically powerful drives.

Before El Sherbini levelled after a tie-break in the second.

But the 20-year-old made a string of errors as the match see-sawed back into Massaro's favour.

Backed by a vocal Middle Eastern crowd, El Sherbini drew level again but the Norfolk-born European number one prevailed in an exciting fifth game.

Massaro may have just turned 32 but after defending her World Series title in the desert state, the sands of time don't appear to be catching up with her.
