  • Sixth seed Kei Nishikori progressed to the third round of the ATP 1000 Paris Masters on Wednesday, after a tight match against Jeremy Chardy.

    Script:

Sixth-seed Kei Nishikori faced a tough encounter with Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in the second round of the Paris Masters on Wednesday.

The first set saw both players hold serve until Nishikori appeared to have gained a crucial advantage when he broke in the 11th game to move 6-5 up.

But Chardy responded, breaking back immediately to take the set to a tie-break, which Nishikori eventually won 7-4

The second set followed a similar pattern, with both holding serve to force another tie-break.

And it was the Frenchman who came out on top, saving five break points before winning it 8-6 to level the match.

However, Chardy was unable to maintain his form as the Japanese dominated the decider.

Nishikori broke twice as he raced to a 5-1 lead, before adding a further break to take the set 6-1 and book a third round spot, where he will face either Leonardo Mayer or Richard Gasquet.
