Warne aiming to attract audience with 'rock and roll cricket'

Thursday, November 05 2015 by SNTV
  • Global cricket superstars Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne headline a star-studded lineup of renowned players from around the world in the inaugural "Cricket All-Star Series" on Saturday, November 7 at 1:00 p.m at Citi Field.

The New York event is part of a three-city tour marking the first time these icons have played in the United States. It also renews the famous rivalry between "Master Blaster" Tendulkar and "King of Spin" Warne.

    SOUNDBITE (English) Shane Warne:

"So our thought process was let's spread the word of cricket to non-playing countries. It's easy, if we took all these players to India or England, Australia, or anywhere where those guys play cricket, you know, people will flock to it and have that opportunity to see them. And still love it. But we want to start where it's difficult, we always like a challenge. And we sort of think of ourselves as the Harlem Globetrotters of cricket. We're giving free coaching to kids. We're going to schools, we're inviting kids down to training, give them expert tips off any of the players, we're inviting the women's teams, the under-19s team, there so many people coming down that we're giving free coaching, and that, to. And we're hoping that one day that some of these American young kids might say: 'you know what. I want to take up cricket.' And in how ever many years down the track that America make the World Cup team, and they play in a proper World Cup, and some of those players might have been at one of our training sessions and say: 'I listened to Brian Lara talk about batting, I listened to Sachin talk about batting, or Wasim Akram gave me this tip, Shane Warne gave me this tip, and suddenly they're playing national cricket. How amazing a story would that be?"

    SOUNDBITE (English) Shane Warne:

"I just encourage fans, non-cricket lovers, the cricket that you have seen so far, the cricket that you imagined, the cricket that you think is boring, this is not any of that. This is rock and roll cricket. This is entertainment. It's a bit like WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) meets baseball. And it's just full on... the atmosphere there, it's a great family atmosphere. Smiles on faces. We want to win some hearts of people. If we can make people interested in the game of cricket that weren't interested before, great. If we can put some smiles on some ex-pats faces to see their heroes live, then we feel like we've been a success."
