  • SuggestedLeadIn: Reaction from Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik - who announced that he will retire from Test cricket at the end of the match - and England batsman James Taylor at the close of play on the third day of the third Test in Sharjah, UAE on Tuesday.

Pakistan reached 146 for three in their second innings at stumps - an overall lead of 74 - after bowling England out for 306 in their first innings earlier in the day.

Script: SOUNDBITE (English) Shoaib Malik, Pakistan all-rounder:

(on being recalled to the Test side after five years and choosing the right moment to retire from Test cricket)

"I didn't play Test cricket for, like, five years and I think that was those years where I wanted to play Test cricket and I think, taking retirement from Test cricket after scoring a double hundred (in the first Test), I think this is the right time, becasue we have some good youngsters and they are knocking at the door, and I think this is the right time to take retirement, so that they can come into the team and get adjusted. Obviously, disappointment is there, because I didn't play Test cricket for those five years, but this is part of life and you just move on."

SOUNDBITE (English) James Taylor, England batsman:

(on the late bowling spells from Jimmy Anderson 1-36 and Stuart Broad 1-19 which borought England back into the game)

"Yeah, that was an outstanding spell and exactly what we needed. They showed a lot of guts and character to bowl the length they did, period, as long as they did and they always bowl well in tandem and we needed that and they bowled exceptionally well and they got their just reward at the end with that big wicket."
SOUNDBITE (English) James Taylor, England batsman:
(on his first innins score of 76 after being out of the side for three years)
"Yeah, I was excited to get out there, to be fair. I loved every second of it yesterday, not so much today, but yesterday was really enjoyable and to play in those conditions, and like you say, it's been a frustrating three years, trying to get back into the side, but I loved every second of it yesterday and it's a must-win game for us and I knew that and I felt really good at the crease, just disappointed that I didn't kick on today, but that happens. We're in a good position."
