Maria Sharapova took on U.S. Open champion Flavia Pennetta in the final Red Group round-robin match at the WTA Finals.
The 33 year-old Italian, looking for a win to put her through to the semi-finals opened up a 4-2 lead in the first set.
But Sharapova who's lost the last three meetings between the pair broke back in the eighth game.
She then went on to take the opening set 7-5.
It was plain sailing for the number three seed after that and Sharapova closed out a 7-5, 6-1 win in an hour and 28 minutes.
Sharapova completed the round-robin phase with a 3-0 record, while Pennetta, Agnieszka Radwanska and top seed Simona Halep won one and lost two each meaning Radwanska grabbed the second qualification spot from the Red Group on sets won.
