Roger Federer took on Philipp Kohlschreiber in the second round at the Swiss Indoors and he was made to work for his win.
The match swung on a single break of serve in each of the three sets but the 17 time Grand Slam winner was an eventual 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victor.
Federer will now play David Goffin of Belgium in the quarter-finals.
Fifth seed Richard Gasquet also progressed after a highly entertaining match against Dominic Thiem.
The Frenchman winning in straight sets 7-6, 6-4.
Seventh seed Marin Cilic started his second round match against Teymuraz Gabashvili as a strong favourite.
The Croatian eased to a 6-3, 6-1 win in an hour and 15 minutes to book a quarter-final match with Rafael Nadal.
Jack Sock took on fellow American John Isner in another last 16 clash.
Sock barely put a foot wrong against sixth seed Isner - taking the first set on a tie break, before closing out the match 7-6, 6-3.
He will face Donald Young in the quarter-finals.
