"What we tried to do was to pick the best side. We know New Zealand are going to be very, very worthy opponents. In fact they're a damn good side. And you know it's very important for Steven Smith and David Warner, the two leaders of our group, very important they get off to a good start. And I mean I don't personally think it was time for just wild experimentation. I think we had to be very measured in what we did with this team to allow the new captain the best chance of getting off (to a good start), and it is a test match. I mean that's the other thing, you know, it's all very well saying pick youth and go with youth all the time' but you have got to pick the best side, and hopefully and I say hopefully because they're as I said earlier, there are other combinations which, you know, we thought could've been just as good, maybe, but after a long discussion we came up with this twelve."

"We all love the game of cricket and we all love Australian cricket. And it's, you know, it's heart-wrenching to ring a bloke and tell him he's not in the side. It's even more heart-wrenching to ring a bloke and tell him he's being dropped. And you know I don't enjoy that part of the job, but someone's got to do it. And it's just, it's a matter of fact that you know, I just keep on saying, I'd love to play fourteen but you can't and you know, there's guys that have got their opportunity now and unless they grasp it, then you know, I know that these guys that have missed out will be doing their darnest to state their case again, and again. And that's the game unfortunately, or fortunately, I don't know."
