Garbine Muguruza faced Angelique Kerber in the round robin stage of the WTA Finals in Singapore on Wednesday.

With both players having won their opening matches, a second win for either of them would put them in real contention for a place in the semi-finals.

After a tight start to the opening set during which the players traded break of serve, Spaniard Muguruza reeled off three straight games to close it out 6-4.

She broke again in the eighth game of the second set when Kerber put a passing shot wide, and soon after claimed the 6-4 6-4 win with a backhand volley.

Muguruza has proven to be a thorn in Kerber's side all season long, winning tight encounters at Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and Wuhan.

Muguruza will play her final group match against Petra Kvitova while Kerber will take on Lucie Safarova, after the pair played out a hard-fought match -Kvitova getting the better of Safarova.
