Six-time champion Roger Federer advanced to the second round of the Swiss Indoors in Basel on Tuesday (27th October) following a straight sets win over Mikhail Kukushkin.

Roger Federer opened his defence of the Swiss Indoors with a match against a man he'd never lost to.

Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazahkstan was soon on the backfoot as Federer raced into a two-love lead.

The World No.3 consolidated the break dictating play from the net.

Federer took the first set in close to just half an hour and was cruising here taking a 5-2 lead in the second.

The top seed winning 6-1, 6-2 and he should face sterner competition with Philipp Kohlschreiber in round 2.

Another first round match up saw Sergiy Stakhovsky up against Grigor Dimitrov.

With the Bulgarian in fine touch.

Dimitrov took the opener 6-3 and then finished off in style to taking the second 6-4.

He'll now face Rafael Nadal.

Joining him in round 2 is John Isner who won through against Ernests Gulbis.

Wednesday sees the completion of first round matches and then the headline act of Dimitrov vs Nadal.
