A clash of Czech Republic's finest in Singapore on Wednesday as Petra Kvitova took on Lucie Safarova.

Seven times these compatriots had met previously with Kvitova winning on all occasions.

And it was the potent weapon of the Kvitova forehand that clinched the opening set 7-5.

Into the second and the World No.9, replacing Serena Williams in the tournament, gave her best on the forehand to break immediately.

Yet, the two-time Grand Slam Champion broke back and forced the error to mirror the first set scoreline.
