Script: Italy's Marco Schiavone wins the second European Footgolf Championship in Madrid, Spain on Sunday. It looks like a golf course, plays like a golf course, but the object here is entirely different. As is the equipment. At the second European Footgolf championships, at Palomarejos Golf Club, just outside Madrid, it's man vs football, and the undulations of the landscape. Think it looks easy? Think again. Most members at the gold club are quietly intrigued says the golf club's sport manager Ernesto Gonzalez:

SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Ernesto Gonzalez, Sports Manager, Palomarejos Golf Club:

(on how 'traditional' golfers react to footballs being kicked around the course):

"At the moment they think it is a little wired, a little strange but slowly they are getting used to seeing it on the course and the truth is most of them want to try it."

To putt, most players tend to poke the ball towards the hole with toe-end of their boots.

The sport is growing, several countries have a national association. It's another chance at sporting success for Dioni Olivares:

SOUNDBITE (English) Dioni Olivares, Spanish footgolfer:

(on taking part in the European Footgolf Championship):

"It was a dream of mine when I was young to represent my country, I did it in handball, I love, I dream for this and now I am representing Spain in footgolf."

And some, like French footgolfer Didier Anelka, brother of footballing superstar Nicolas Anelka, rely on their skills running in the family,

SOUNDBITE (French) Didier Anelka, French footgolfer:

(on how he expects the European Championships to play out):

"The standard, the level of the game here today is quite high. We have players from different countries, around nine. I will try my best to struggle round and hopefully we'll be in contention at the end of the day."

This year, Marcel Peeper shone. The Dutch former footballer played more than 300 games in the Dutch leagues. But in the end, Marco Schiavone won the play-off and bought the individual trophy home for Italy.
