Jo-Wilfried Tsonga faced Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the third round of the Shanghai Masters.
The Spaniard who beat Roger Federer in round two was unable to sustain his winning run though and 16th seeded Tsonga won 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-4.
Tsonga now meets Kevin Anderson who surprised Kei Nishikori in straight sets.
Anderson, the newest member of the world's top 10 managed the feat in two tie-breaks - being made to wait on match point after a challenge before eventually being awarded the match.
Third seed Andy Murray met American John Isner in his third round match.
Isner's never beaten Murray at all before and although the game went to three sets, Murray held firm and secured the 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4 win.
Next up for Murray is Tomas Berdych in the quarter-finals.
Fifth seed Berdych beat number 10 seed Gilles Simon
The Czech player a 6-3 6-3 winner.
