The 37-year-old left-armer took 311 wickets from 92 Tests, 282 from 200 ODIs (One-Day Internationals) and 17 from 17 Twenty20 games.
He played in three World Cups for India and was a member of the World Cup-winning squad in 2011 and the runner-up team in 2003.

"Cricket has been my life all told, but at some point every cricketer has to take this decision. And with me also, the decision came to me, and when it came to me I had a good chat with my family, and they also supported my decision... and that's how I came to the conclusion."
Khan, who was plagued with injuries in recent years, played his last Test against New Zealand in Wellington last year.
