Blind and Netherlands still hopeful of qualification

  • Coach Danny Blind was on Monday (12th October) seeking to stay optimistic as the Netherlands aim to continue their record of qualifying for every European Championship since 1984.

SOUNDBITE (Dutch) Danny Blind, Netherlands coach:

(On Turkey's 2-0 win away to Czech Republic on Saturday in Group A):

"Yes, that was disappointing. But there is still a chance, and we have to focus on that. We could just hang around and think we can't do anything, or focus on what is still possible to reach. We are in the same situation as we were one match ago (against Kazakhstan) but this is our very last chance, therefore we have to win. We have to focus on the result and wait."

SOUNDBITE (Dutch) Danny Blind, Netherlands coach:

"I don't want to say how we are going to play. It's not really that we are preparing some special line-up. One thing is clear, we have to win and if we don't win then we can't expect anything."

SOUNDBITE (Dutch) Danny Blind, Netherlands coach:

(Asked for reason Netherlands are in such a situation?)

"That's difficult to say now but I think that losing against the Czechs in the first match was painful. If we had got at least one point then, or even if we'd won, then we could have started the qualification in a positive spirit. Not only do you lose two points, but you let your competitor take advantage, and that influenced our start mentally. If you begin with a win that works well, in my opinion."
