Former Bangladesh fast bowler Shahadat Hossain was remanded in custody shortly after he surrendered to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's court in Dhaka.

The 29-year-old was suspended from all forms of cricket by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on September 13th.

Hossain, who has played 38 test matches and 51 one-day matches for his country, had been in hiding after allegations surfaced that he abused of an eleven-year old child.

Hossain and his wife, who has also been arrested, face charges of assaulting a child and employing a minor. The pair deny the charges.

Police had raided the cricketer's house after the child was found crying on the street in Dhaka.

The victim's lawyer released the following statement:

SOUNDBITE (Bangla) Syed Nazmul Huda, Victim's lawyer

"Hossain has helped Bangladesh earn prestige in cricket, and he has been rewarded for it. But violation of human rights like torturing a victim must not be accepted, That is why we expressed such strong opposition to his bail with the court. In fact, having heard our submission against the bail, the court sent him to jail."
