Standard Liege have had a poor start to the season - only Westerlo sit below them in the table.

Meanwhile, opponents Genk knew a win could boost them up to fourth.

Genk didn't waste any time to set the tone for the match. Just 9 minutes in, Christian Kabasele fired the ball into the net with a header, taken from Bailey's corner shot. He swiftly followed this up with a quirky celebration.

Standard recovered well and had a chance to equalise following a cross from Milec, but Emond's attempt at a goal was blocked by a confident leap from Koteles.

Genk marched ahead to strengthen their lead with goal number 2 in the second half. Standard's defenders allowed the ball to slip through their feet as Igor de Camargo shot it to the right of the goal, assisted by Thomas Buffel.

Minutes later Buffel had his moment, scoring with a strong header into the back of the net, after Bailey twised the ball out of the way from Standard's defenders.

It was all a little too late for the visitors who managed to get one goal to their name on the final minute. But a faultless freekick from Anthony Knockaert right at the end made no difference to Genk, leaving them victorious at 3-1.
