Ferrer wins Malaysian Open

David Ferrer became the first Spaniard to win the Malaysian Open after defeating countryman Feliciano López 7-5 7-5.

The top seed hails from Valencia -- famous for its oranges -- and his first title in just over seven months renders victory very sweet indeed.

Ferrer has developed a reputation for being one of the best on tour at facing serve and it's easy to see why. That return was better than the Royal Mail.

The world number eight is somewhat of a baseline battler so when the 33-year-old charged forward with purpose it was signal of intent. When you're born in the popular fishing spot of Marina Alta, perhaps an affinity with nets shouldn't come as a surprise.

A break apiece then but when Lopez dropped his serve for the second time it cost the world number 17 the set.

In the second Ferrer showed he was fleet of foot... and mind.

The former world number three saved his only break point of the match before sealing victory.

A keen reader, Ferrer's 25th career trophy sees him write another chapter in his tennis history.
