Venus Williams won her biggest title in five years after Garbiñe Muguruza pulled out of the Wuhan Open final with an ankle injury.

It was the former world number one's 47th WTA singles title and her greatest triumph since lifting the Dubai Tennis Championships trophy in 2010.

For Muguruza the ankle injury was a recurrence from her straight sets semi-final defeat of Angelique Kerber, while Williams was struggling with a thigh problem.

But it was the 35-year-old seven-time Grand Slam champion who prevailed 6-3 3-0.

The Venezuela-born WTA Rising Star being broken twice in the second before withdrawing.

Both players will be rewarded however; Williams jumping from 24th to 14th in the world rankings and Muguruza climbing up three spots to fifth.

While both players are on course to qualify for the end-of-season WTA Finals in Singapore.
