Elfyn Evans clings on to lead at Rally of France.

  • Elfyn Evans hangs on to lead at the rain-blighted World Rally Championship's Rally of France on Saturday (3rd October), as Jari-Matti Latvala charges hard to catch the Welsh leader.

    Script:

Heavy rain saw the first stage of the day at the Rally de France on Saturday cancelled.

The first run through the 43.69-kilometre (27.14-mile) Casamozza to Ponte Leccia test was scrapped late on Friday afternoon after landslides made the roads unraceable.

But when the action did resume, leader Elfyn Evans endured a desperate battle to maintain his position at the head of the field.

But Jari-Matti Latvala claimed the fastest time on Saturday's opening stage - a repeat of Friday's final test - to slash Evans' advantage to just 1.7 seconds.

Evans was 21.2 seconds slower than Latvala and finished seventh in his M-Sport Ford Fiesta RS.

Andreas Mikkelsen was second fastest in his Volkswagen Polo R to leap from seventh to third, 27.8 seconds off the lead and 1.3 seconds ahead of Kevin Abbring.

Fourth fastest was Citroen's Kris Meeke - rising from eighth to fifth, 4.5 seconds ahead of team-mate Mads Ostberg, who regretted changing his DS 3's set-up in the expectation of better grip.

Despite setting the joint-fastest time in the shakedow, Robert Kubica had a tough day - he retired from fifth with two punctures and just one spare wheel in his Fiesta RS.
