Unseeded Venus wins Wuhan Open

  • Reaction from champion Venus Williams and Garbine Muguruza on Saturday (3rd October) following the final of the WTA Wuhan Open.

    The unseeded Venus Williams won the WTA Wuhan Open title after her Spanish opponent and fifth-seeded Muguruza retired with a left ankle injury while trailing 6-3, 3-0.

    It was Williams' 47th career WTA title.

    SOUNDBITE (English) Venus Williams, Wuhan Open winner:

    "There were a lot of great moments. I wasn't expecting the 700th victory. I hadn't been keeping count. And then a tough draw here, playing a lot of seeds in good form and even to the final, Garbine (Muguruza) has had an amazing year. This has been a great year for her and I think she was playing well in the final but cleary had too much pain and couldn't focus on the tennis anymore. So I wish her to feel better."

    SOUNDBITE (English) Venus Williams, Wuhan Open winner (on reaching the WTA season finale in Singapore):

    "If I reach Singapore then I've got to play even better than this week. I can't just be happy to get there. I've got to get there and be ready to play. Everybody is playing well. All the top players will be there so I would love to arrive there. But if I get there, I want to get there swinging and going for it."

    SOUNDBITE (English) Garbine Muguruza, Wuhan Open runner-up:

    "Well, it was very tough especially when you have to retire in a final because all the athletes (want to win). It's a special moment and you want to be strong to face it. I'm a little bit disappointed but happy with this amazing week."
