  • SuggestedLeadIn: Roberta Vinci of Italy progressed to the last four of the Wuhan Open on Thursday (1st October) with a 7-6, 6-3 triumph over Karolina Pliskova.

Spain's Garbine Muguruza cruised past Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday (1st October) and into the last four of the Wuhan Open.

Script: US Open finalist Roberta Vinci is in a rich vein of form.

The Italian has won 10 of her last 11 matches - her only defeat coming against Flavia Pennetta in the final at Flushing Meadows.

And she extended that run against eighth seed Karolina Pliskova in the quarter finals of the Wuhan Open.

Vinci got off to a strong start and opened up a 3-1 lead over her Czech opponent before Pliskova got back on serve.

The first set then went to a tiebreak where Vinci asserted control - winning it 7-2.

From then on, the number fifteen seed never looked back - going 3-0 up inthe second set before taking it 6-3.

Meanwhile, Garbine Muguruza went into her last 16 match against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova having never lost to her Slovakian opponent.

    And she extended that record.

The 21-year old Spaniard came out blazing from the start and had to much power - hitting six times as many winners as Schmiedlova.

Muguruza wrapped up a 6-2, 6-2 win in 72 minutes to reach the last four - and also secure a spot at the WTA Finals in Singapore.
