Venus denies in-form Konta to reach reach semi-finals

  • SuggestedLeadIn: Venus Williams beat Johanna Konta in three sets in the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open on Thursday (1st October).

Script: In-form Johanna Konta took on veteran Venus Williams in the semi-final of the Wuhan Open in China on Thursday.

The Briton had won 21 of her last 22 matches going into the match, including a victory over top-seeded Simona Halep the previous day.
    Williams, by contrast, was unseeded.

But her experience showed, as she took the first set 6-4.

Konta fought back in the second, however, taking it 6-3 and levelling proceedings to a set apiece.

And it looked as though things were going Konta's way in the third.

That was until Williams fought back from 5-3 down, before serving out the victory.

The former top-ranked American will next face U.S. Open finalist Roberta Vinci, who beat Karolina Pliskova 7-6 (2), 6-3.

Williams, who earned her 700th career victory to reach the quarter-finals, has never dropped a set against the Italian veteran - the same woman that ended younger sister Serena's chances of a calendar-year Grand Slam in the U.S. Open semi-finals.
