New sports to be included at Tokyo Olympics

Tuesday, September 29 2015 by SNTV
  • SuggestedLeadIn: Japanese organisers on Monday (28th September) proposed adding five sports to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo - baseball/softball, karate, skateboarding, sports climbing and surfing.

Script: The organising committee for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo picked five sports from eight finalists.

Baseball, karate, skateboarding, sports climbing and surfing were chosen, while bowling, squash and wushu failed to make the cut.

SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Fujio Mitarai, Chair of Tokyo 2020 Additional Event Programme Panel:

"We are confident that they will arouse great enthusiasm within the people of Japan and bring significant value to the Tokyo 2020 Games"

"Baseball, as you know is like a national sport. And softball had highest viewer ratings of all sports in the live broadcasting in the Beijing Olympics. We are confident that they will arouse great enthusiasm within the people of Japan and bring significant value to the Tokyo 2020 Games."

The IOC has repeatedly stressed that any additional sports must have a strong youth appeal, something which Tokyo organisers sought to address.

SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Koji Murofushi, Sports Director for Tokyo 2020 and 2014 Olympics hammer-throw gold medallist:

"The world may be surprised that Tokyo has selected these sports, but I think youths will be able to relate to these sports, and I think it will bring a new wind to Tokyo

The recommendation will be submitted to the International Olympic Committee, which will make a final decision in Rio de Janeiro in August 2016.

SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Naoko Takahashi, 2000 Olympics marathon gold medallist:

"There is still just about five years to the Tokyo Olympic Games. Those athletes who are at the top of their game can aim higher, and for those who may yet be beginners, there is still plenty of time to gain a chance to win a medal. I look forward to the success of everyone in Japan"
