Sharapova retires as Jankovic and Venus progress

  • SuggestedLeadIn: Serbia's Jelena Jankovic was a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 first round winner over Britain's Heather Watson at the WTA's Wuhan Open on Monday (28th September).

    Maria Sharapova's first match for almost three months ended when she retired with a forearm injury in the third set against Barbora Strycova on Monday (28th September).

    Venus Williams was a straight sets 6-1, 7-6 (4) winner over tenth seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the first round of the Wuhan Open in China on Monday (28th September).

    Script: Jelena Jankovic was taken to three sets by Heather Watson in the Wuhan Open on Monday.

    In front of a sparse crowd, Jankovic won the opening set 6-3.

    Watson responded by breaking in the opening game of the second set - and went on to take it 6-2 to level the match.

    But Jankovic eventually came out on top in the deciding set and sealed her progress to the second round with a fine backhand which Watson couldn't reach.

    Meanwhile, Maria Sharapova's injury problems continued.

    A leg injury meant she missed the entire hard-court season, including the U.S. Open, but this time it was a forearm injury.

    Sharapova was leading Barbora Strycova 7-6 (1), 6-7 (4), 2-1 when she was forced to retire due to the problem.

    Meaning Barbora Strycova booked her place in he second round.

    And finally, Venus Williams made light work of Agnieszka Radwanska to progress in China.

    The American sealing the win 6-1 7-6.
