-
Marcos Baghdatis won through to the second round of the St Petersburg Open with a three-set victory over Ernest Gulbis on Tuesday (22 September).
While, fifth seed Tommy Robredo and the unseeded Jerzy Janowicz progressed to the second round at the ATP St. Petersburg Open on Tuesday (22 September).
Script: St. Petersburg is the location for the ATP Tour this week as Marcos Baghdatis and Ernest Gulbis made for a stellar first round match.
The two had been seven times previously, with the Cyrpiot winning five of those.
Baghadatis won the most recent of those encounters which came in the third round at Wimbledon this year.
And again the Australian Open finalist from 2006 was looking good.
Here claiming the first set 6-4.
The Latvian, Gulbis would respond, taking the second set by the same scoreline.
However, Baghdatis stayed strong as Gulbis attacked and hit a pin point backhand to win it in three.
Baghdatis would play the winner of the day's later game between these two - Tommy Robredo or local favourite Mikhail Youzhny.
Youzhny won the St Petersburg Open title back in 2004.
And Robredo would take the first set 6-4.
Youzhny gave the home crowd something to celebrate winning the second set.
Yet the Spaniard was on his game and in commanding form on his serve.
Robredo winning through to the last 16 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
The final match of the night saw the sixth seed Benoit Paire up against Jerzy Janowicz.
Following the Pole take the first 6-4, Paire retired citing extreme fatigue.
