Blake recounts events of his mistaken arrest

  • SuggestedLeadIn: James Blake on his mistaken arrest in New York hotel.

Script: SOUNDBITE: (English) Former tennis player James Blake being interviewed by Robin Roberts on 'Good Morning America'

"I'm a little shaken up but I'm ok. A couple of bumps and bruises but I'm alright."

Q: What exactly happened? It's broad daylight, you're in front of the hotel waiting to be transported out to Flushing for the Open and then what happened?

A: "It was really just shocking because I was just waiting, minding my own business and I saw someone coming from the street running directly at me and, naive as I may be, I thought it was someone I didn't recognise - a high school friend or something - coming to mess with me and give me a bear hug. It turned out quickly that it wasn't. When he picked me up he did pretty much hug me but he picked me up and body slammed me and put me on the ground and told me to turn over and shut my mouth and put the cuffs on me. The first words out of my mouth were, 'I'm going to 100 per cent cooperate. I don't want any incident or whatever,' just out of reaction from what I've seen in the media. I don't want any sort of miscommunication..."

Q: You were communicating this with him?

A: Those were the first words out of my mouth. I'm going to 100 per cent cooperate. I don't know what happened. I'm going to cooperate with you and he put the cuffs on me. At no time did he let me know he was a police officer. He just put the cuffs on me and said, 'Stand up,' and I asked what was going on and he said, 'We'll tell you soon.' That was it."

Q: So you didn't resist at all?

A: No and I feel lucky that I didn't because I am happy that my reaction that I was actually smiling at the person because I could see if I put my arms up or if I did anything it could be a sign of showing some sort of resistance and instead of having a little bruise on my leg I might have some broken bones or some actual injuries because it didn't seem like he was slowing down and he was going to continue that tackle."

Q: And he was a plain-clothes police officer? He was in shorts...?

    A: "Yes, t-shirt and shorts."

Q: And he never identified himself?

A: "He didn't have a badge in any way showing. Not around his neck. Not on his belt. Anything. The police officers that walked up later I saw a couple of of badges on belts but none were really displayed and no one identified themselves. I didn't get one name out of anyone.
