Mardy Fish reacts for retirement after US Open exit

Friday, September 04 2015 by SNTV
  • Further reaction from the US Open on Wednesday (2nd September).

Script: SOUNDBITE (English) Mardy Fish, Lost to Feliciano Lopez 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 5-7, 3-6 (on ending his career at the US Open where he first became ill in 2012)

"You know, I wanted this to be -- this one specifically to be the last one. I probably would have chosen this one as my last one regardless if I didn't have any issues with my health in the past couple of years just because this is the biggest one and the most fun and the one that you want to go out on. But this one was extra special or extra special meaning for me because of how it happened in 2012."

SOUNDBITE (English) Agnieszka Radwanska, Defeated Magda Linette 6-3, 6-2 (on defeating a fellow Pole at the US Open)

"I think was pretty good match. I didn't expect her to be that good. I never play against her. We know each other for so many years, but never really played against each other. So that was actually quite a challenge, for me to play someone from the same country. Not very happening very often.

But, well, I'm just very happy that I think in important moments, in the key points, I was a bit better. I think that's why the score was like that."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Marin Cilic, Defeated Evgeny Donskoy 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 (on returning to play on Arthur Ashe for the first time since winning the 2014 US Open)

"It was for sure amazing. I was very relaxed to come on the court. You know, I played also really well from the beginning, so I adjusted very quickly to the new conditions, if you want to call it that, with the new roof. You know, I just enjoyed myself on the court. It was very hot day, very humid.

Evgeny is kind of player that's very, very quick. Gets a lot of balls back. I had to work a little bit extra in some points. But overall, really satisfied with my tennis, and, you know, with serving performance today. So glad to be back on the Arthur Ashe with good tennis, for sure."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Milos Raonic, Defeated Fernando Verdasco 6-2, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 (on his match)

"Yeah, it's a great thing regardless of who's on the other side of the court. That's the most important thing for me, considering I haven't played many matches, getting as many as I can. That mental fortitude today is what has gotten me through, and it's what's going to give me a chance in my next match as well. I just have to keep plugging away and trying to be better and better each match. Those are the goals. Hopefully I can give myself a lot of matches to play here."
