  • SuggestedLeadIn: Reaction from Roger Federer, Lleyton Hewitt, and Thanasi Kokkinakis on day two of the US Open at Flushing Meadows in New York

Script: SOUNDBITE: (English) Roger Federer, defeated Leonardo Mayer 6-1, 6-2, 6-2:

"I feel good now. I actually wasn't so confident yesterday and today. I just felt like maybe could be one of those matches I just couldn't see it coming. So thankfully I took this match extremely serious. I thought at times almost I was taking it a bit too serious. I got that lucky in Shanghai, so that's why that was just - it was just creeping around in my mind that maybe today was going to be a bad day. Plus I had practiced with him, you know, here, I don't know, the day of the draw, and he was playing very well in practice, too. It wasn't just Shanghai I was looking at. I'm happy I'm through. I'm happy I played as good as I did. Now at least I know how conditions really feel in a match environment. Looking back at the match now, I feel like I played pretty freely, considering it was the first-round match, which is always not easy to do."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Lleyton Hewitt, defeated Aleksandr Nedovyesov 6-0, 7-6, 1-0, retired (on choosing to play the US Open as a warm up for the Davis Cup):

"Yeah, pretty much. After we won the Davis Cup tie, I wanted to play obviously. Wally (Masur) and Pat (Cash), Joshua Eagle and Rochey (Tony Roche), everyone wanted me to play. Obviously take a wild card, could have gone to another Aussie, but I felt like to give myself the best opportunity for the Davis Cup tie, it was the right decision."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Thanasi Kokkinakis, lost to Richard Gasquet 4-6, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, 2-0, retired (on remarks made by fellow Australian Nick Kyrgios to Stan Wawrinka on court in Montreal):

"I'm past it. We talked. It's sorted. It's not really an issue for me anyway at the moment. I've known him for ages. One little thing isn't going to change too much. That's not ideal what happened, but I've talked to him. I've talked to everyone in the incident. I've moved past it and I'm sure they will, too."
