IOC sued for 2020 Olympic Games Logo

  • SuggestedLeadIn: The logo for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo was scrapped on Tuesday (1 September) amid ongoing allegations of plagiarism.

Script: Tokyo's Olympic organisers have decided to scrap the logo for the 2020 Games following another allegation its Japanese designer, Kanjiro Sano might have used copied materials in his design.

Chief Executive Officer of the organising committe, Toshiro Muto, explains:

"We have considered the opinions of the judges and the organising committee, as well as Mr. (Kenjiro) Sano and have come to the decision to withdraw the current design. The decision to make a fresh start in creating a new logo seems to be the most appropriate."
However organisers have supported designer Kenjiro Sano against allegations of plagiarising the design, and have publicly maintained their belief in Sano's originality.

"We have an understanding that the design shows enough evidence of being different (to other designs) and, as Mr. Sano suggested, the design is recognised as being an original by Mr. Sano and the design committee has agreed with this assessment. At the same time, when the issue has been expanded upon this far without gaining an understanding from the general public, we find this to be a problem."

The logo will be withdrawn immediately following a drop in public support in the wake of new claims that Sano used an image from someone else's website without authorisation.

Sano has faced allegations of plagiarism since the logo was unveiled in July.

A Belgian designer sued the International Olympic Committee over similarities to his logo for a theatre.

Sano denied the claim, but has also faced other questions over his past designs.
