Safarova through to Connecticut Open final

Saturday, August 29 2015 by SNTV
  • SuggestedLeadIn: Fourth-seeded Lucie Safarova won through to the final of the Connecticut Open after ending the run of lucky loser Lesia Tsurenko with a 6-2, 7-6(4) victory.

Script: Lesia Tsurenko has been in excellent form of late progressing all the way to the semi-finals of the Connecticut Open without losing a set in the tournament.

However, the world number 46 was against a determined Lucie Safarova on Friday.

The Ukrainian, lost in qualifying but got a stroke of luck and entered the main draw when top seed and 2013 champions Simona Halep was forced to withdraw through injury.

She went into the match with two big wins against Barbora Strycova and Karolina Pliskova in earlier rounds, but the 26-year-old proved no match for Safarova early in their semi-final.

The Czech fourth seed, who is enjoying a career-best season, raced to a set and two-break lead before Tsurenko began to re-find her form.

She broke Safarova three times - and saved a match point at 5-4 - to force a second set tie-break.

But the world number six then finished the job on her second match point 6-2, 7-6, she can now look forward to facing the winner of the second semi-final between Kvitova and Wozniacki in the final.

Following the final, Safarova will be up against Tsurenko again as the two meet in the first round at the US Open.
