'England can still improve' - Bayliss

Tuesday, August 25 2015 by SNTV
  • England coach Trevor Bayliss and Australia counterpart Darren Lehmann reflect on England's 3-2 Ashes series triumph.

Script: SOUNDBITE: (English) Trevor Bayliss, England coach:

"I think I said over the fourth Test that we're not going to paper over the cracks. We've got a few areas that we've got to be better in. There's a few positions in the team we can be stronger in. I'm sure all the players in the team will be doing their upmost to fill those eleven spots but we need some depth as well. To be good and successful over a sustained period you need that depth in your squad."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Trevor Bayliss, England coach (asked about the lack of runs from England's opening partnership):

"It's always a concern when that doesn't happen (they don't score runs). Adam (Lyth) hasn't scored as many runs as he would like either. What I will say is that he has come in this summer against two very good bowling attacks and I think it's a sign to the rest of county cricket as well that it is a big step up from one level to the next."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Darren Lehmann, Australia coach (asked if he has decided what changes need to be made in selection):

"No, we'll sit down as a selection group and work out where we want to go moving forward. It's obviously a disappointing result. I'm really pleased for the result today (Sunday) fighting back and playing really well. Lord's and here (The Oval) were outstanding and not so good at the other three. We'll have to let the dust settle, play the one-day series and pick a side moving forward for Bangladesh and home over the summer."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Darren Lehmann, Australia coach (on what needs to improve with Australia's batting):

"Players have got to get better at leaving the ball and staying in longer. Our 60 at Trent Bridge was under really difficult conditions and Edgbaston was the same although we didn't bowl very well that day at Edgbaston either because they were great conditions to bowl. At the end of the day we got bowled out for 60 and 136 which really hurts you. It doesn't matter what attack you play, if you can't get enough runs you can't get the result you need."
