Gold victories for Ennis-Hill and Bolt

  • SuggestedLeadIn: Usain Bolt won the men's 100 metres gold medal at the World Championships in Beijing on Sunday (23 August), beating Justin Gatlin.

    Script: In the Bird's Nest Stadium where he shot to fame at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, today Usain Bolt won the 100 meters world title in 9.79 seconds.

    Justin Gatlin came in close behind with 9.80 seconds.

    Gatlin had won the 100 at the 2004 Olympics before serving a four-year suspension for doping. The 33 year old American took bronze behind Bolt at the 2012 Olypmics and silver at the 2013 world championships in Moscow.

    America's Trayvon Bromwell and Canada's Andre De Grasse were both awarded a bronze medal after clocking identical times of 9.91 seconds.

    Jessica Ennis-Hill won gold in the heptathlon. With three solid performances in the long jump, the javelin and the concluding 800 metre, the Olympic world champion swept past runner-up Brianne Theisen-Eaton in the finishing straight.

    Ennis-Hill won 115 points ahead of Theisen-Eaton. with 6,669 points,

    Ennis-Hill has now taken her second world championship title in 6 years.
