Michael Clarke's retires on a high

Monday, August 24 2015 by SNTV
  • SuggestedLeadIn: Reaction from Michael Clarke after he led Australia to a thumping win over England in his final Test match on Sunday (23rd August) at the Oval.

Script: SOUNDBITE: (English) Michael Clarke, Australia captain:

"I think it's part of our culture that we expect Australians to do well in sport. I'm really proud that we were able to show that character and resilience and determination to want to finish on a high. So I'm really proud of the boys but obviously disappointed that we've lost the series."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Michael Clarke, Australia captain (asked if he's happy to retire from test cricket with a win):

"Yes it is the end of my career and I'm very fortunate to have played for Australia as much as I have but this is not about me. What I want the people and the Australia public to see is the fight inside that changing room and how much they wanted to come out and play really good cricket in this last Test; to show that we've let ourselves down during the series but there's still talent and hunger to have success in that changing room. I'm really grateful that the boys got the result that we're all after. We've put in a lot of hard work in this series and to lose 3-2 is disappointing but it's a nice way for myself and Chris (Rogers) to finish."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Michael Clarke, Australia captain (asked if he feels he is not able to play at test level anymore):

"The desire is there so if I thought I could go to Bangladesh or to the Australian summer and play unbelievable cricket I probably would have fought on. So I think I've probably accepted it's the right time. I believe that for a number of reasons and that's probably one of them."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Michael Clarke, Australia captain (on the short matches during this Ashes series):

"This game of cricket, and I hope I remember this for the next 50 years if I live that long, it's always an easier game watching from afar, it's much harder when you're playing. I think at Cardiff and at Lord's we did see some really good cricket. I'm not saying the wickets were fantastic but we're seeing a winner and a loser over four days. I don't think that's been the case in the last three Test matches. People have tickets for today to watch a whole day's play, tomorrow. And the same for Edgbaston and Nottingham. I think the fans of the game deserve to see a really good contest for five days.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Michael Clarke, Australia captain (addressing the media):

"I just want to say thanks as well for all your support. I've obviously had a lot of people in the media who have supported me throughout my whole career so I'm really grateful and thankful for that. And even to the people that haven't, to the people that knock me and criticise me, that's driven me to get out of bed every single day and become better. So thanks for having me."
