England need to come back stronger

  • Reaction from Steven Finn and Steve Smith following day two of the final Ashes Test at The Oval on Friday (21st August) where England are 107-8 and trail Australia by 374 runs.

Script: SOUNDBITE: (English) Steven Finn, England fast bowler (asked whether he is less concerned about the result as England have already won the Ashes):

"We're disappointed with the way we played today. We had a very, very poor day. There's no hiding away from that. Every time we put on we want to do ourselves and our country justice and the people who have paid money to come here and watch. Today was not a good day. We've had lots of good days over the last couple of tests. We have to make sure that tomorrow is a very good day so that we stay in this game."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Steven Finn, England fast bowler (on what went wrong on Friday):

"I don't think it was an attitude thing, I think we had the right attitude. I think our preparation was as good as it's been for any of the other test matches. I think some of our execution wasn't as good as we'd have liked it to have been and I think we have to respect the fact that Australia did bowl very well. They got a lot out of that wicket and we didn't get as much. Hands up, Australia had a very good day. We have to come back and do our best to avenge that tomorrow."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Steven Finn, England fast bowler (asked about the possibility of a follow-on):

"I don't know to be honest, that's why I'm not a captain and I can't make those decisions! Whatever they decide to do we have to be prepared. I'm sure our opening batsmen will be prepared to follow on tomorrow because if we don't get those runs, we have to be prepared to follow on. But also, as a bowling unit we have to be prepared to go out there and put in a better performance than we did in the first innings. Whatever we have to do tomorrow we have to do it well. Everyone in the dressing room is determined to do so."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Steve Smith, Australia batsman (asked about his 143 runs):

"It would have been nice to have had a day like this at Edgbaston or Trent Bridge. It's disappointing obviously that we can't win the series but Michael (Clarke) said before this test match that he wanted a lot of fight and character from us and I think the way we grinded it and batted in the first innings, particularly early on day one, I thought the openers were outstanding, they really set the tone for us. To have posted 480 was a pretty good effort. To have them 8-100 was a very good couple of days."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Steve Smith, Australia batsman (on whether he'll give captain Michael Clarke any advice with the follow-on):

"We'll see how we go there. It would have been nice to have had that wicket tonight and potentially bowled them out but we'll see how we go early in the morning. If we get the two wickets quickly Michael might think about sending them back in but we'll wait and see how we go."
