Reaction as Australia take advantage of the Ashes fifth test

Friday, August 21 2015 by SNTV
  • SuggestedLeadIn: Reaction from the Oval at the end of the opening day's play in the fifth Ashes Test between England and Australia after the tourists were put in to bat and made 287 for 3.

Script: SOUNDBITE (English) David Warner, Australia opening batsman:

(on the course of the day's play)

"Not at all, it's another Test match and you know, we're here to win and that's what cricket is all about. Obviously, the series is done, but for us it's about winning this Test match and at the moment it's a good toss to lose. We're in a great position at the moment, obviously with Steve (Smith, 78 not out) and Adam (Voges, 57 not out) out in the middle, so we've got to come tomorrow and still be positive."

SOUNDBITE (English) David Warner, Australia opening batsman:

(on the series and incoming captain Steve Smith)

"Yeah and also credit to the English bowlers, they bowled fantastic this series and you know today, it just looked like they probably didn't hit their right lengths. For a lot of the time out there, I felt like they probably bowled a fraction too short and in every other game they have bowled fantastic. They've put it up there, allowed us to try and drive and you know, we've been getting the odd one away and then the nicks are coming, but today the way he (Smith) addressed the conditions and adapted to it was fantastic and look, he's one of those kids who has, you know, probably... he's going to have a very successful career. He's shown what he can do, he's the next captain as well, so look, he's in a good position that's for sure, moving forward."

SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Wood, England opening bowler:

(on whether it was a mistake to put Australia in to bat and how well the England bowling unit performed)

"No, I would say it was a tough day of Test cricket. I thought we bowled all right as a unit. I think Australia played well, to be honest, in that first sort of session. I thought that they stuck at it really well, left a lot more balls than they did in the previous game and I think sometimes you've just got to say 'Hats off to them' and well played. I actually think we bowled quite well. We stuck at it all day, I think the intensity was there and there was no complacency in terms of because it's the last game, the Ashes are secure. I think we tried our best and sometimes you just say 'Well played' to them, because I thought, especially in the first session, we bowled really well. They just played really well and hats off to them."
