Cook looking for a 4-1 series win

Thursday, August 20 2015 by SNTV
  • England trained on Wednesday (19 August) ahead of the fifth and final Ashes Test at The Oval, with captain Alastair Cook looking for a 4-1 series win.

Cook confirmed bowler James Anderson's absence from the final match following the injury he sustained in the third Test at Edgbaston.

SOUNDBITE (English) Alastair Cook, England captain:

"We've come into this game trying to win the series 4-1. That's what we discussed, Trevor (Bayliss) and I, and Paul Farbrace (assistant coach), and it seemed the best way of going. Clearly Adil (Rashid), who's been with us for every single squad, the pitches haven't quite suited two spinners, so that's the reason and Adil will have to wait his chance. But he's, I think, really improving as a cricketer and I think he feels a lot more comfortable in the England environment. I think he had a good one day series, and he'll probably get his chance in Abu Dhabi."

SOUNDBITE (English) Alastair Cook, England captain:

"Unfortunately Jimmy (Anderson) is not going to make it. He's gutted about it. He's made good progress - real good progress, actually - from where he was at Edgbaston, but it's probably a week or so too early. He bowled in the nets yesterday, but at about 60-70 percent and, you know, that's not how you go into a game. So he's gutted, he's worked really hard with the fitness guys, the medical team have been brilliant with him, but just, as I say, it's about a week too early."

SOUNDBITE (English) Alastair Cook, England captain

"We do. I think the danger, always, as a player, is worrying about the end result. The other four games we've played in this series, where we've won three of them, and even the Lord's game where we didn't play well, we weren't bothered about the result at the beginning od the game. Clearly you are, if you understand what I'm saying, it's all about making sure we play the way we want to play, our attitude is the right attitude and the guys are playing to their strengths as players and playing the way they want to play. So that's important, and the result (so far) has looked after itself. With all the talk about 4-1, it's (about) making sure the guys have got their feet on the ground and realise how much work and patience, skill, all those kinds of words, went into getting those results. Whether we win or lose this game, I know how the guys' attitude has been in the last few days in practice and that we're ready to go again."
