Sebastian Coe on his new role

Thursday, August 20 2015 by SNTV
  • Sebastian Coe was confirmed as the new head of the IAAF in Beijing on Wednesday (19 August).

Script: Sebastian Coe has this morning been declared the new president of the IAAF.

"This, for me, is the pinnacle. It is my sport, It is my passion and it is the thing that I always want to do. And to be in a position to help to shape the future of my sport with, I have to say, a very very strong team that got elected this afternoon and this morning."

Speaking today in Beijing, he explained what is at the top of the agenda:

"There is a zero tolerance to the abuse of doping in my sport and I will maintain that to the very highest level of vigilance and that is something that, clearly over the next week or two, will want to sit down and discuss with my colleagues."

The new president has proposed to create an indepedent anti-doping panel.

"I have espoused the concept of an independent testing process. That isn't in any way to question the technical or the professional ability of our teams in Monaco. They are world class at what they do. They are best in class at what they do. I won't bend the knee to anybody on that subject in defending their professional integrity. But you know we do have to recognise there is a too broad a view, this is something whether real or perceived, that there are conflicts and there are loopholes. I think a independent system is what we need to close down any thought that we are doing anything that have been entirely vigilant about that."
