SuggestedLeadIn: Jerzy Janowicz beat Gael Monfils 6-4, 7-5, and Ivo Karlovic knocked out Gilles Simon in the first round of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati on Monday (17th August).

Script: The opening round of the Cincinnati Masters gave Gael Monfils a tricky looking opening tie with Jerzy Janowicz.

And that was proven as the Pole led 5-3 in the first.

He would go on to take the set 6-4 and then the second 7-5 to knockout the seeded Monfils.

Janowicz will now play either Jared Donaldson or Nicholas Mahut.

The chances of another upset were high with Ivo Karlovic having a productive summer.

The Croat has beaten the likes of Tsonga and Raonic this summer and it was Frenchman Gilles Simon who he faced in the opening round.

And has previous with Simon having beaten him in three of their four meetings.

Karlovic would break the 10th seed in the seventh game and go on to win the opening set 6-4.

Simon took the second, then unsurprisingly Karlovic finished off like this...

The Croat will now face Martin Klizan in the second round.
