  • SuggestedLeadIn: Swiss teen Belinda Bencic won the Rogers Cup on Sunday (16th August) following a three-set victory over Simona Halep.

Script: Having upset Serena Williams to make the Rogers Cup final, Belinda Bencic was looking to secure the trophy as she faced Simona Halep in the final.

The 18-year-old, who triumphed on the WTA Tour for the first time earlier in the year at Eastbourne, has been on a role beating four of the top five seeds on her way to the final.

Halep on the other hand was struggling with a leg injury and suffered from heat exhaustion during the match.

The first set saw Halep receive treatment for her leg, despite this, it went to a tie-break and Bencic mounted a comeback to secure the first set 7-6.

The trainer breaks continued for Halep in the second set, and this time around it did the trick as the Romanian fought hard to force a tie-break, and this time around sealed it to push a decisive third set.

Halep took a further break, one too many according to Bencic, who voiced her displeasure with the umpire.

Her anger spurred her on in the third as she raced out to a 3-0 lead, too much for Halep who was forced to retire due to the injury.

Bencic therefore securing her second career win, and most probably the sweetest so far given the calibre of the opposition she faced on her way to triumph.
