  • SuggestedLeadIn: Andy Murray defeated Novak Djokovic for the first time since 2013 in the Rogers Cup final on Sunday (16 August).

Script: Andy Murray faced up against Novak Djokovic in the final of the Rogers Cup on Sunday in Montreal, in what is starting to become an intense rivalry.

In hot, muggy conditions at the Uniprix Stadium, Murray was looking to lift his third Rogers Cup following wins in 2009 and 2010.

In doing so he would need to put an end to an eight match losing streak against Djokovic, his last victory over the Serb coming back in the 2013 Wimbledon final.

Djokovic meanwhile was bidding to tie the ATP Tour record for consecutive Masters 1000 wins at five.

The world number one was playing in his ninth straight final, a run that included championship victories over Murray in the Australian Open and at Key Biscayne in Florida.

The match was hard fought, Murray served at 3-1 up in the third set.

Following a ferocious baseline battle that went to deuce 10 times, Murray fought off six break points to take the game and move 4-1 up.

Djokovic had two more break points in the final game, but the Scot pounded two service winners and eventually secured the win 6-4. 4-6. 6-3.

It was only the fourth defeat in 56 matches this year for Djokovic.

Murray meanwhile, will move up to world number two, ahead of Roger Federer, following his win in Canada - a perfect prelude to the US Open.
