Murray reaches Rogers Cup final

Monday, August 17 2015 by SNTV
  • Andy Murray sweeps past Kei Nishikori to reach the final of the Rogers Cup and guarantee a return to second in the world rankings.

Script: Britain's Andy Murray swept past Kei Nishikori to reach the final of the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

The 28-year-old won 6-3 6-0 in just 65 minutes to set up a final against world number one Novak Djokovic.

The result means the Scot will overtake Swiss Roger Federer in Monday's new world rankings and return to number two for the first time since 2013.

Murray used the variety restored to his game by coach Amélie Mauresmo to claim the first set.

Before going on to break the Japanese star in the first game of the second.

The British number one then sealed victory with a brilliant backhand return:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Andy Murray, new world number two and Rogers Cup finalist:

(on rising to the place of world number two again)

"... yeah, it's nice to have done that. There's obviously great players around and the depth in the game is extremely strong and, yeah, after everything I went through last year, to be back near the top of the game is great..."

Never mind second in the world. Murray will want to finish first in Montreal after Sunday's final.
