Rogers Cup: Bencic stuns Serena

Monday, August 17 2015 by SNTV
  • Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic beats world number one Serena Williams to reach the Rogers Cup final in Toronto.

Script: Belinda Bencic could hardly believe it. The unseeded teenager defeated world number one Serena Williams in three sets to reach the Rogers Cup final.

The match went according to script when the 21-time Grand Slam champion went on to seal her second break point and the opening set.

But the18-year-old Swiss fought back in the second. Amazingly winning this point to draw sporting applause from the American.

After levelling the match, Bencic lost serve three times but broke the 33-year-old four times to secure a memorable win.

In doing so, the world number 20 became the youngest player to beat Williams in a completed match since Maria Sharapova in 2004.

The giant killing continues for Bencic, having defeated 2012 Wimbledon runner-up Agnieszka Radwańska, world number five Caroline Wozniacki and former world number one Jelena Janković this year.

Will world number three Simona Halep of Romania be another victim in Sunday's final?
