McIlroy: 'US PGA hopes over'

Monday, August 17 2015 by SNTV
  • SuggestedLeadIn: World number one Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland says he is 'realistically' out of the running despite a 68 that takes him to six under after the penultimate round of the US PGA Championship. Australia's Jason Day leads, two shots ahead of Masters and US Open champion Jordan Spieth of America.

Script: SOUNDBITE (English): Rory McIlroy, Shot a 4-Under-Par 68 (-6 Overall):

"It's all about setting a realistic goal and target. I know that the way the back nine's playing there, the leaders could be 14-, 15-under by the time the day ends. So, that would leave me eight shots back. In the back of your mind, you still think you have a chance, because that's what your competitive nature tells you. But if you're looking at it realistically, I want to go out there tomorrow and shoot the best score that I've shot this week. I've stood still a little on Thursday and Friday, but definitely improved today and you want to improve on that again tomorrow. If I do that, I think that, as a whole, the week would be somewhat of a success. It wouldn't be quite what I wanted, but as I said, I can take positives from it and move on."

SOUNDBITE (English): Jason Day, shot a 6-Under-Par 66 (-15 Overall):

"You know what? It's just - my confidence level is high, but I'm just more enjoying just being out on the golf course, rather than in previous positions that I've had in Major Championships, I've viewed them as very stressful and kind of hard to go out and play the next day. But I'm enjoying myself so much on the golf course. It's been fun to be out here in pressure situations. It's good to be in contention, especially on Sunday. It's good to have the lead, so that's a plus. To be able to do what I did, especially on the last three days, put myself in position here, I've done what I need to do, now I've just got to focus on round four and just kind of keep pushing forward."

SOUNDBITE (English): Jordan Spieth, shot a 7-Under-Par 65 (-13 Overall):
"... you look at it as a single major, as a chance to win this major and in that there's enough fight left in us to finish this one off tomorrow, I believe. And we'll probably be having to come back from a couple behind."
