IOC confident Rio is in good condition

  • The IOC Coordination Commission on the 2016 Olympics proposed a dive at Guanabara Bay during a news conference in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday (August 12).

The Coordination Commission for the 2016 Olympic Games ended their inspection tour in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday.

Chairwoman of the IOC Coordination Commission, Nawal El Moutawakel, remained positive in spite of the changes forced on Sunday's road cycling event due to more political unrest in the city.

"We are aware of what the country is going through but we still enjoy a very strong of all kind of levels within the country."

However, the news conference was dominated by questions concerning water pollution.

"Regarding the water quality, I can confirm to you that the IOC puts in the highest priority the athletes."

Olympic Games Executive Director Christophe Dubi said the IOC has ruled out viral testing and will instead be sticking to World Health Organization guidelines of only bacterial testing.

"Their guidelines are very clear. They have restated that bacterial testing is the measure that has to be used and it will continue to be used by the authorities."

Asked by a local reporter whether Dubi would fulfill a promise he made earlier that he would be diving at Guanabara Bay, he first joked that it was former Olympic Games Executive Director Gilbert Felli.

    "You said Felli!"

But, when pressed, he was saved by Coordination Commission Chairwoman Nawal El Moutawakel, who ended the conference inviting everybody to dive in.

"I propose we all dive, all of you."
