  • Intro:

European Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke thinks that Rory McIlroy is in with a chance of victory at the PGA Championship and said on Tuesday (11th August) "he's done many amazing things in his young career, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him contending this week."

The PGA Championships takes place at Whistling Straits this week, and captains Darren Clarke and Davis Love 111 gave updates as to how their teams were coming along.

Clarke feels that Rory McIlroy is in good shape for a run at defending his title, even though his injured ankle is still healing.

    SOUNDBITE - Darren Clarke

"No, I'm not surprised to see him back here. He obviously has got a wonderful team around him, and he would have done everything he could to get back as quickly as possible. I'm sure with an ankle injury he would have been advised not to come back until fully fit. If you injure an ankle and keep playing on it, it gets worse and worse and worse. He's back, he may not be competitively sharp, for obvious reasons, but he's world number one. He's done many amazing things in his young career, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him contending this week."

United States veteran Davis Love III feels that the game is heading into a generational shift.

Just as Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus gave way to players such as himself, he feels Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson - while still not finished themselves - are slowly passing the baton to McIlroy and Jordan Spieth.

    SOUNDBITE - Davis Love III

"Well, they're like Arnie and Jack, eventually the guys are going to chase them out of the game, like we did to Arnie and Jack. You get older and you have to move on. But I expect big things out of both of them really. I think this year a few more tournaments left for both of them and I expect they'll play well. Phil always, when he gets to the playoffs, he has a couple of good weeks. I would expect that next year is going to be big for both of them. I think they're far from done. They're excited about it. I know Phil still has a lot of energy and a lot of passion for it. And obviously Tiger is working very hard on his swing and his game to get back to form."
